Efforts to reopen horse slaughter plants fail
Associated Press - May 22, 2007
AUSTIN (AP) - Turned away by the US Supreme Court and apparently denied reprieve by the Texas Legislature, the state's two horse slaughter plants appear likely to remain closed.
A midnight deadline Monday in the Texas House passed without a hearing given to a Senate bill that was expected to be amended to authorize the reopening of Dallas Crown in Kaufman and Beltex in Fort Worth.
In a second blow later that day, the US Supreme Court denied hearing the plants' petition to overturn a federal appeals court ruling that upheld a Texas law and effectively shut down the plants earlier this year.
